Old river rock has a way of looking tired fast. It shifts, weeds push through it, and plants that made sense years ago start to outgrow the space or just plain die off. That's exactly what we were working with on this job - a garden bed that needed a full reset, not just a patch job.

We pulled out all the existing river rock and removed eight plants that were no longer working in the space. Starting fresh like that sounds like a lot, but it's honestly the right call when a bed has run its course. Trying to work around worn-out materials and struggling plants never gives you a clean result.

Once we had a blank slate, we installed new plants selected to fit the space, laid down Blue Granite Stone throughout the bed, and set concrete edgers along the perimeter. The Blue Granite gives the bed a sharp, consistent look that holds up well over time - it doesn't fade out or scatter the way older river rock tends to. The concrete edgers lock everything in and create a clean line between the bed and the lawn.

The difference between a bed that looks maintained and one that looks designed usually comes down to the materials and the edging. When the border is crisp and the stone is uniform, the whole front of the house reads as intentional. That's what we were going for here, and we think it landed. Homeowners in Eau Claire deal with tough freeze-thaw cycles every year, and concrete edgers with granite stone hold up to that a lot better than some of the softer alternatives.

This type of repair is one of the more common calls we get - beds that were put in years ago and just need a full refresh with updated materials and a stronger layout. If your garden beds are starting to look more like a headache than an asset, this is the kind of work that puts them back on track without tearing up your entire yard.
