This one had a rough start - and it wasn't our doing. We were called in after another contractor left the job unfinished. What the homeowner was left with was a failing retaining wall, loose block scattered around the yard, bare gravel patches where patios should have been, and a backyard that hadn't come together at all. That's a frustrating spot to be in as a homeowner. You've already spent money, and you have nothing to show for it.

The first thing we tackled was the retaining wall. Walls fail for one reason almost every time - the work underneath wasn't done right. No proper base, no adequate backfill, no drainage. So we tore it down and rebuilt it from the ground up. That means compacted base material, correct backfill behind the wall, and drainage built in so water has somewhere to go. What you see above the surface is only as good as what's buried beneath it.

From there, we got to work on the full scope. Two paver patios - one of them a sweeping curved design with a built-in block border wall and a custom block fire pit at the center. The other, a clean paver surface running right up to the garage. Two block stairways to connect everything with easy access. The kind of outdoor space that actually functions the way a homeowner imagined it would when they hired someone the first time.

The backyard restoration wrapped it all together. Grading, seeding, straw cover - the whole yard put back in order so the hardscaping has a clean backdrop to work with. A lakeside property like this one deserves to look the part, and now it does. The view toward the water from the upper patio level is something else.

When a project gets abandoned or done wrong, the cost to fix it is real - in money, in time, and in the stress of dealing with it. We've seen it more than once. The right approach isn't a shortcut, it's doing the groundwork correctly so the finished product holds up for years. That's what we showed up to do on this Holcombe job, and that's what we delivered.
